Swan Lake punches way above its weight class! There were not huge crowds, but that is not what you're looking for on this course. Instead, the quality, and enthusiasm of the support rather than the quantity and the beauty of the course was its hallmark. The setup of this race led to runners spending quality time together, and led to friendships I made that weekend that will last years. Thank you so much!

Good race. If we hadn't had to deal with the wind, it would have been a perfect morning. Thanks for putting it on!

The course was very even ground, I liked the light gravel-not too rough but good for the knees instead of concrete. Good amount of drink stops and people were very nice.

This was my first full marathon, but I've run several half marathons. The course is largely gravel roads, with some gradual hills. There aren't many (any) spectators at a tiny race in the middle of nowhere South Dakota, but the race organizers and volunteers are terrific. Aid stations were plentiful and fully stocked with water, gatorade, bananas, pretzels, and the occasional gu and watermelon. There were volunteers everywhere checking on you and offering anything they could. The course is clearly marked at every possible turn. I could not have asked for a better first time experience and would definitely go back again.

This is a fun race in a small-town atmosphere. There is little elevation change, but over half of the course is on (generally well-packed) gravel roads. It's a good place to get comfortable running these distances, as the course and crowd are low on the intimidation scale. It is well organized and well run.

I really enjoyed this race! I liked running on the gravel and by the lake. There were a few hills to make it challenging but not too difficult. There wasn't much crowd support but the volunteers that were out were awesome! The aid stations were plenty! I liked that there was a photographer on the course too!! I would run this race again!

Swan lake (AKA "Viborg") is among the best of the mid-western marathon's. Fifty Stater's If you need a South Dakota Marathon this is a "best" choice. Don't be intimidated by "travel" issues as its a piece of cake getting there. Lots of options to stay at the camp and great food. The swan lake race group knows how to put on a great and safe race.

It was super hot so the weather made it challenging. I didn't mind running on the gravel though.

Very well done for a small, friendly marathon. Hospitable race officials and support staff at Swan Lake

Outstanding course support! Not only were the volunteers at aid stations encouraging and helpful, but race officials were on the course making sure everyone was OK along the course due to heat. Wonderful small race supporting a worthy cause.

Swan Lake is one of my favorites. I let others know about it in my travels to other marathons.

The food and drink at the end of the race was great. The parking was VERY well organized. And I couldn't believe how many volunteers there were. Everything was well organized. I liked how the food and picnic tables were right at the end so I could watch/cheer other runners as they finished as I was recovering. I also really appreciate that you used chip timing as I feel like I get an accurate time that way. Two suggestions from me: 1) I couldn't find a port-a-poty at the race start. Maybe I just didn't see it in the dark? I just used one along the course instead. 2) I know that at some races you just throw your cup on the ground. But I didn't feel like I should do that here because the wind would have blown it away. So I threw it in the garbage can. But the can was right by the drinks. So I basically had to stop at each water station. I think the cans could have been farther down the course so I could have kept running while I took a drink. Also, I kind of expected to see more people as I came into Viborg. But it was a ghost town. I guess that is understandable since it was before 6:00 AM! But maybe next time someone could be playing some music or something. Thanks for organizing a great race!

I thought the race was very well organized. Had great communication via email before the race. Lots of water stands throughout the race with wonderful volunteers.

This was my first win & I loved the course even though it didn't have very many trees for shade, but I'm glad we started early. Thanks for all the best experiences of my life! :)

I loved running around the lake - so pretty. I enjoyed the paved road into Viborg. I really like the quiet town on that early Sun morning. I had a totally great experience. It was my first 1/2 marathon, and I'm 60!

I really enjoyed this race. It was well-run and the volunteers did a fantastic job. Being in such a remote area, you expect not to have many people cheering along the way, but the ones there were very supportive and friendly. The only cons were that the tee shirts ran very large - and there should have been a little better something for age group winners than just a ribbon. It was a nice race - very quiet, peaceful and serene. Thanks so much!

The Swan Lake half Marothon is great! I have run it three times and hope to continue to run it. The staff is great and the course is perfect!

This was a small town race that provided great hospitality. It was a good experience, but no crowds whatsoever except at the start/finish area. I enjoyed running along the country roads. The weather in 2009 was particularly good. There is little shelter along this course. Wind, sun, rain, you would be at the mercy of any of those. And the post-race meal was fantastic. Home cooked food at its finest.
