Comments from runners.

This race is beautiful. The half was a quarter mile long though according to my and a few friends gps watches. Wouldn't be a big deal if I'd have known but kicked way earlier than I would've. More importantly, this race starts way too late. The sun has been up for three solid hours at starts time. I realize the weather is out of your control, but the likelihood of overheating increases with every hour into the day. I experienced heat stroke for the first time in my life this day and I don't know if I will run it again if it doesn't start earlier as it's been two weeks and I'm not healed up. I plan to run four halfs a season and am not a novice. Even 7:00 would be an enormous improvement. This race is well put together otherwise and Deadwood offers plenty of receptions for runners which is pretty cool.

Absolutely beautiful run thru the black hills. There were not a lot of spectators along the way because we were on trails in the hills where there was no room for spectators. Spectators were along the trail in open areas and all along the last mile. This was my first half marathon and I would highly recommend it to anyone!!!

Start at 7am. 8am was way too hot. Runners like earlier runs. Beautiful course. Shuttles for everyone there fine. Why is pasta feed not a buffet?

There's no reason shuttles have to have us the 2 hours before the race. Where is the hand sanitizer by the bathrooms? That is just gross. We needed shade after the race. Couldn't find the chocolate milk. Signs, volunteers directing us would have helped. Disappointing because this race is usually wonderful

Fantastic event, organization and course. Yes, difficult for someone living at sea level to start at 6,000 ft and run mostly downhill for 13.1 miles. However, the trail is outstanding to run on, great surface. The organization is excellent, plenty of water stops. Start area and finish were very well organized. Packet pickup was well managed, nice little expo. The support of Deadwood for the event was exceptional. Beautiful region to visit and tour. Couldn't recommend this one higher. Only suggestion, hold the 5k earlier in the day and have one water stop.

Weather is obviously unpredictable! And this year was beautifully HOT!! The course is wonderful! The only problem is being at the start line by 7 and having to wait an hour till the race starts. Especially on a hot day. But as previously stated weather is unpredictable! Otherwise everything was very well ran! Great job! Will be back next year for sure! 😊

The wait time at the Starting line is much too long. Wonder if start time needs to be moved up by at least 30 minutes. We took last bus & still stood around 30-45 minutes before start. Was disappointed in lack of swag bag goodies and t-shirt compared to other half marathon races. Finish area was very congested. Overall race experience was still awesome - beauty of course and ease of catching bus shuttle. Would definitely run it again. Did not have good customer service hotel experience (First Gold) for many of the runners but nothing to do with your organization. And who can control Mother Nature - she was a hot beast!! We'll be back next year!

Deadwood Mickelson was my first half marathon in 2012. It made me fall in love with running and races. I ran again in 2014 and was blown out of the water once again by the race support, logistics, and volunteers. I have completed well over 25 half and 2 full marathons in other states and haven't found a race yet that holds a candle to Deadwood Mickelson. They have M & M's at an aide station! Also, they feed you bagels and tons of food at the start! The volunteers, support, and crowd are amazing! I'll be back in 2018 to tackle the full!

My only suggestion would be to start the run earlier... 8:00am seemed kind of late, as the last part of the run was really warm and in full sun.

This race needs to be moved to Saturday! I ran it the last 3 years but due to Sunday race day, I will not be running it again. I have to take work days off to run it. The town of Deadwood would make so much more money if on Saturday. People would stay gamble, eat and drink. Being from Colorado (a BIG runner state) I guarantee you would get multiple Colorado people to come if on Saturday.

This is one half marathon I come back to year after year. The volunteers are amazing and the course is beautiful. Nothing beats outstanding scenery and friendly people. Can't wait for my fourth run of the Deadwood Mickelson Trail Marathon next year!

I seriously think this race should be advertised as 98% down hill as it may bring in an even bigger crowd of runner! Loved that it was downhill!!! An absolute gorgeous course, easy terrain, phenomenal views, great community support as well as wonderful aid stations !

I love this race but there could be a few more refreshment options after the race. Like pop or other things like chips or granola bars.

- J.L. from Lincoln, NE
Race Year: 2017 | Added: June 11, 2017

It would have been nice to have the option to have the registration packet be sent to your house. If I would've had to work on Saturday there would've been no way I could've picked up my registration packet. If they can't be sent to people's homes then you should either have the option of them being dropped at the hotel the person is staying at or extend the evening hours on pickup times. Also same with the pasta party; 2 things, 1 extend the time so people who live in the area clans are to work can make it up. 2 have options for people with diet restrictions (gluten free) and advertise it. Other than these things it was a good experience for running my first half marathon.

I thought the race should've started at least an hour earlier, possibly an hour and a half. It was so incredibly hot and I heard many people saying how much they wished it started earlier.

2016 was the 15 year anniversary for this race, and it was lackluster at best. I ran this race in 2007, and it had substantially more fanfare and excitement then. The pre-race festivities, "swag bags" (if you could call them that, just a cheap bag, mine broke before I picked up my bib), and the overall post-race activities were terrible. I do not believe that this race is worth the registration costs. You can run the beautiful course for free, but don't bother paying for this race.

Great race as always. I would suggest that you have heaters at the start of the marathon It is often cold and many new runners to the event are not prepared for the two hour sit and freeze.

This was my first ever half marathon and my first ever "big" race, so I don't have anything to compare it to, but I thought you did a wonderful job of getting everyone from the hotels to the buses and to the start line (and just organizing in general). Portapotty lines were getting very long about an hour before the race and also at the finish line, so that's the only thing that I think could be improved (more of those). Otherwise, I thought the aid stations were fantastic, all the volunteers were friendly/helpful/encouraging, the spectators at trailheads were fun and great, the scenery was spectacular, the course was so enjoyable, the medal was great, the music at the start line was fun, etc. I would definitely consider doing this race again!!

First time at Deadwood, beautiful run. Volunteers were the best I've encountered. The wait at the beginning was MUCH TOO LONG! I was prepared for the run too early & had a good run until mile 10 when I crashed. My fault though, 'no walking' was a goal and I ran out of fuel. Would have liked having chip mile marker to check & review my pace later. Need more shade and/or sitting places at the end, I sat in dog poop, I'm sorry to say!

- G.G. from Alliance, NE
Race Year: 2016 | Added: June 11, 2016

There didn't seem to be enough buses for those shuttling back after the race. I had a ride, but I heard several people complaining because there only was one bus after and the line was really long in very hot temperatures. Also, can you maybe look into a large vessel with ice so the water could be cold at the end?! I was unable to drink the water because it was so hot! Food tables had way more available this year--thank you! The chocolate milk and watermelon were the best, but I appreciated seeing full sized bagels this year! Great shirts and bags and an overall good experience!

Deadwood is one of my favorite races. This is my third year running, one year with the full and two years with the half. Very organized and plenty of aide stations with water and food. Loved the long sleeve shirts this year. This shirt is one that I will wear several times. Please consider long sleeve shirts in the future with the same material. The route is absolutely beautiful.

I had never been to South Dakota before. I loved it! Loved the area, the kindness of the community, and I loved the trail--the views were incredible! I can't wait to return for another race. Everyone related to the race was knowledgeable and very helpful. I have been recommending this race to all my runner friends! My favorite of my 6 marathons!

I love this race! Have done it 3 times and will run it again. The race organizers are amazing. They somehow manage to keep it personal at all time, respond to all email questions and are completely organized. MIt is low key and the staff, runners and families are great. MIt feels like a small family run rather than the size it is. I do think you need more than one host hotel.

Course difficulty is average, but the course is incredible. Average difficulty due to the downhill nature of the half marathon. Although, the incline sections were challenging. Only complaint about pre-race logistics is bus pickup at 6:15 and race start at 8. Spent over an hr and a half waiting at start line. Would be happy with 6am pickup and 7am start. Crowd support is hard to evaluate because many parts of the course are secluded and hard to get to. Areas that are accessible had plenty of support. Overall, a wonderful race and one I anticipate doing for years to come.

A fun destination race in a part of the country I may not have otherwise made the effort to visit. A gorgeous, scenic course with a not-to-be-underestimated constant uphill grade for the first 14 miles. Also to not be underestimated is the effects of altitude for us lowland dwellers.... some aspects of not acclimating to it affected myself and my fiancee (whom I ran with), severely impacting us. In hindsight, I wish we'd have given ourselves an arrival date at least one more day beforehand (versus the 1.5 days we had). I would have liked to have seen gels as part of the on-course nutrition, even if only at every other aid station - or, at least a note in the pre-race literature explicitly stating that there aren't any. My bad for not packing any for myself, but I also kinda ASSumed that there would be (even though your list of items available did not include them). Definitely my bad, but perhaps stating this explicitly will help others avoid my mistake in the future. Due to the aforementioned difficulties that we had, we were among the slower people out there. Unfortunately for us, this meant that the post-race stuff available to us was quite lacking. I didn't look for or care about much of any of it, but my fiancee noted that you were out of many things by that point, and that the atmosphere in general was already in "we're done and outta here" mode; the music wasn't going, the party vibe was gone, etc... I guess that happens when you're in the back of the pack, but it'd be nice for future racers, I'm sure, to have their 6 hour finish treated as warmly as the 3 hour finishers. Just food for thought. Overall, a really good event that became a really tough day for us due to altitude/dehydration issues.

The first mile was a little bit long according to my watch. I wasn't the only one getting my mile splits about a tenth of a mile before each mile marker. I got to the half marathon starting line area very early and was able to use a porta pottie right away, but later it looked like there were not enough porta pollies for 2000 people.

5th time I have done this race! Look forward to it every year, very well run and organized! I am very lucky as my husband takes me and my friends to the start and picks us up at the finish line--so we do not have to shuttle, however I think it is awesome they do have the shuttle. Also, HUGE thanks to all who volunteer--without them it could never happen!

I love this race; I have done it now 7 times. I love the route, I love the fans, I love the natural beauty. For the past two years I have been disappointed with the "virtual" goodie bag, though. I prefer "real". But otherwise, nothing bad can be said: your volunteers, the organization, the cooperation of the whole town of Deadwood, the welcome feeling: it is unsurpassed and I love it. Thank you for all the hard work and for making me feel like a winner!

The support at the water stops was awesome. The volunteers at water stop 18 took the time to help bandage my heel and one of the volunteers at the last water stop came walking towards me with the water before I even got to the table. However, I was disappointed when I finished and was handed a bottle of water and then a guy packing up the bananas offered me a banana. As a back of the pack runner we are often forgotten about and not given the same consideration that those who finish sooner get. Others that finished sooner had the chance to get chocolate milk and other post-race fuel. Those at the back of the pack train just as hard and are trying just as hard as those at the front. Try to save some post race fuel for the rest of us. I was also pleased though that the photographer was still at the finish when I crossed. I have been at races were their is no photo of me even crossing the finish line. So thanks for the volunteer support and for the photos. Maybe next time I can get in on the post race activities.

Given that it was a trail, I was pleasantly surprised by the support along the way. The fans were great. Everything ran smoothly. It was a fun and friendly atmosphere. One of my favorite moments was seeing my children complete their marathon in the Kids Final 2K race and receive medals. My only issue is that I would have liked to see at least one medical station along the way for the marathoners.

Where available, there were people cheering, which is great. Excellent race and an annual trip for us. The only thing is that the half course is long....it was long last year and again this year. Several people were talking about it, including everyone in our group. We all ended up 3.32-3.4. We did not all run together either...all at separate paces.

- T.H. from Arthur, Nebraska

Great race overall! Very crowded tents post-race so couldn't get to any of the refreshments available, but thankfully the city of Deadwood offered food/beer at another hotel nearby that was free of cost! Not many people took advantage of this even though it was announced several times during the start of the half marathon. You won't get a lot of cheering fans as this race is on a trail with limited access by spectators, but in areas where they were allowed it really was great! If you want a great full or half marathon in a beautiful location with awesome aid stations and volunteers, this is a great one to do! Register early as this one sells out and is appropriately capped to avoid overcrowding on the trail.

As I was one of the top 5 female finishers for the full marathon, I was very disappointed that there were no more chocolate milk considering it was only 3 hrs and 30 mins since the start. The only thing left was water, bananas, oranges and pretzels. As a full marathoner, recovery is key so chocolate milk or more carbs like bagels or other snacks at the finish line is huge. Therefore, we left right away and didn't get to enjoy post race activities like pictures in front of the finisher stand considering I was a top 3 finisher for females I missed so great photo opportunities. Otherwise I was very impressed with the race course, volunteers throughout the course were great!

2014 was my 3rd time running the half which I PRd! The tech shirts and medals were just awesome--what a change from 2005 and 2006! The only thing that was unpleasant was waiting in cold wind and rain for 1.5 hours prior to race. Having several pop up shelters for runners to wait under would have been a great thing since rain was predicted all weekend.

While running, I noticed at the drink stations that cups were being threw on the ground along the trail. Trash cans need to be spread out farther along to account for those who drink slower and more then one cup so trash isn't threw on the ground. I know it was being picked up, but what happens if a wind comes through, some make it over the side hill.... I cringe when I see that much litter on a beautiful trail. Almost wanted to stop and start picking it up but seen the kids tackling the job. Trash cans stationed along the trail also can get those who are supplementing energy along the way. I seen quite a bit of GU packages litter. Enjoyed the run though. Nice job and thank you for a wonderful experience.

Course is primarily downhill - you go up a bit right at the start and then it's downhill until around mile 6 where there is a big uphill section. Some of the downhill parts after you climb are really steep and hard to navigate if you are not used to running down steep terrain. I still felt like it was a fast course and I got a PR that I was not expecting. Overall, it was well organized. There were small crowds of people here and there along the way, a big crowd at the end. Tons of beautiful scenery to enjoy though as you run. Got a really neat tech shirt as a race shirt. Fun finisher's medals.

Pre-race bus service was good but didn't need to be so early - we ended up standing around in the cold for over an hour at the start line. Post-race location was terrible - in a parking lot with no shade, no grass, no seating, and very minimal food. Would like to see packet pickup available on race day so folks who live close enough to drive in that day would not have to drive to town the day before too.

Love this run. This was my 9th DMTM half. It's all about the scenery and the town on Deadwood. I'm too old and it's gotten too crowded to worry about time. :)

This was a beautiful race, but somewhat more difficult than I expected. Wonderful race support from the director and the volunteers at all the water stops; great aid/water/supplies at the water stops, too! Very friendly, fun run.

I have spent quite a bit of time in the Black Hills, but I was still surprised at the beauty of the trail. The crushed limestone surface was very easy on the feet, so my recovery was a little faster than usual. There weren't very many points before the last few miles where spectators could access the trail, but the ones that were there were very vocal and enthusiastic. I thoroughly enjoyed this difficult marathon, and would like to do it again. Not a course to PR on, unless this is going to be your first marathon. Expect your time to be 20-30 minutes slower than it would be on a flatter course at a lower elevation.

The motivational signs were great. Thanks to the volunteers who put them up. Having the race Director in his tux to greet EVERY finisher was awesome.

This is a most beautiful place to run. The 1/2 is mostly down hill and perfect for a novice, nice and fast for a veteran.

I was disappointed in this race because I was bused to an area to stand around for 90 mins before the race started. Not good for a runner to stand around in the cold that long. Very upset..
