I love this race! Hills the first three miles of the half and then the most beautiful gentle downhill course into Hill City!

Loved this race overall. Ran with a family member so wasn't going for a pr. Great weather, aid stations and port a potties were at good intervals. I would recommend having the volunteers hold cups by the bottom, not the top where runners drink from. Almost all stations had at least 1 if not all volunteers holding the cups from the top. And several looked like fingers were in the cups themselves. That turned me off from taking any. It's one reason I make sure to bring water bottles of my own for races. And I'm really thankful I did for this one. The finish line metals, food and drink were nicely placed out for runners to just grab what they wanted or needed without wasting time having to walk a distance to it.

I would like a more appealing race shirt. I do not like tech shirts anyway and the color is really not attractive! I love this race! I love the course! I love running during this time of year!

This was my 2nd half marathon and I had a great experience! I plan on running it next year--beautiful course! Overall, I thought the race committee did a excellent job! Would have preferred a long sleeved race shirt..maybe because of the time of year...lol!

The end of the race I struggled to stay motivated, but the course didn't have many spots for spectators to cheer until the finish line. Overall it was enjoyable and the scenery, weather and volunteers couldn't have been better! Thank you!

The volunteers were AMAZING! Thank you for all the fluids and snacks :) The course is beautiful. There aren't many spectators except for at the beginning and end as most of it follows a trail.

Great all around race. Those walking the half were in the way of the faster full runners. Would like to see it planned where they would be out of the way in time.

Very nice race the trail was hard packed and easy to run on.It was well marked liked the part when you ran by crazy horse. The bus to start went flawlessly and you could wait inside Crazy Horse headquarters .Nice drumming and singing before start. There was some downhill and slight up hill but it all downhill after mile eighteen.I stayed in downtown Hill city and was able to walk to the bus and a slow shuffle back to hotel after the race .Good communication through e mail with race director. Overall a well run race.

This was my first half marathon, so I'm not really sure on course difficulty. It was incredibly special because it was my first and my husband and kids skipped ahead of me to cheer me on as often as possible. I loved the signs from the sponsors, but I wish there had been more spectators. I assume weather was a factor. The only three suggestions I'd have is to have more detailed instructions for newbies on what exactly happens before the race (I knew about buses and bags but that's it!), an idea of what to expect after (I didn't know there was a "finisher podium" to take pictures at, and I later heard rumors of massage!) and to have one more garbage can a bit farther away after each aid station. I know the first two are first timer problems, but I'd have loved more detail going in. Otherwise, it was terrific and I had a GREAT time!

This was a great race; however, I did not especially love the material of the women's cut shirts. Also could have been more swag in the goody bags and more food at the finish (other than fruit). Also wished the energy drink would have been yellow since red is more visible if spilled on clothing. I felt like I was drinking it much more carefully. Loved the start of the race!

Easy packet pickup and getting to, from start and finish . Cool finisher medals. Very low quality tshirt for cost of race and gaudy color....tech fabric would be nicer. Nice course on trail....first 2.5 miles tough.

Great race! The seclusion is a nice change of pace. This is our 4th year running. We would love for the race to be moved back to the end of September like it used to be to increase the odds of nice weather!

This is by far my favorite race! I wish it wasn't the same weekend as the Twin Cities marathon, but I truly love this race! The drumming and singing at the start is breathtaking - as is the course itself. We're so lucky to have this experience to share!

The food available at the water stops was great and very helpful. I am a slower runner so I was disappointed that there was not much at the finish. It is a beautiful course and the people were great.

Loved this race - due to being run on a trail, it's hard to have spectators. The atmosphere at the beginning and end was good. Would definately run it again. Would have liked more long sleeve half zip tops with thumb holes.

This was possibly the most beautiful half marathon course I have ever run! The drumming and singing at the start was so moving and the beauty of the land to follow was overwhelming! I didn't even notice those hills the first 2 miles! ; )

This was a fantastic race! I came in with expectations of running a sub 3 hour marathon until I talked to a course veteran that told me to tack on 20mins to any expectation from a 'normal' course. I think he was pretty close. The run isn't that difficult if your not looking for a fast time. The scenery is gorgeous and I'm pretty sure there aren't too many runs like it out there. I really can't say enough good things about it. It's hard to imagine a marathon in South Dakota that could do a better job of displaying the true beauty of what the state has to offer.

This was the first time that I ran at Crazy Horse and only my second 1/2 marathon. It was totally an awesome experience and I hope to run in it next year. Just a quick shout out to the volunteers handing out the medallions at the end of the race - thank you, oh, thank you for giving me an extra one after I dropped my original one and watched it shatter to bits. You guys were sooo kind!

Overall, it was a good race. Keep up the good work. 1 suggestion- Since it was a bit on the cool side at the finish, I would try to find a company or something of that nature to donate some heat reflective emergency blankets. Just a thought.

Look into foil cover-ups for the end of the race, probably could get someone to donate them. Never will forget the WIND coming up from Custer after the turn-around. Overall Great Race, special thanks to Emily the race director!

As an aging group, we decided this would be our last marathon together (maybe? lol) and we couldn't have picked a better race. Two of our friends did the half and three of us did the full. It is a small well run race. As almost the last people across the finish line, all of the water stop volunteers (some stuck out in the middle of nowhere for more than 5 hours) were friendly and always ready with food and water. It was almost like an ultra with all the food available. The marathon route was majestic in its beauty and we almost felt sorry (almost) for the half marathoners. The 6 miles of uphill on the way back from Custer is rough but the minute you hit the downhill you feel like you just started a different race. Thanks to Joey, our cyclist, who made sure that all were safe on the path and thanks to all the people we met on the path who made it memorable, Miss Montana, Miss North Dakota, Miss California and the Preacher. We will be back, maybe on bikes this time but I couldn't recommend this more highly. Also, if anyone knows what the glass bedroom on the path, somewhere past mile 20, is please let us know:)

Positive-Loved the Native American's playing music and chanting at the beginning of the race-it was beautiful. Some of the most beautiful scenery around! Negative-Only 3 Porta Potty's (all at mile 8) during the race...although I guess the trees were available. At the end of the race I was grabbing some a bagel, water, and an orange and must have veered too close to the finish "chute" (the food and water was placed immediately next to the chute/finish) and some man VERY RUDELY came up, stared without saying a word for a full minute, and then flapped his hands at me to"shoo" me back.

I loved this race. The scenery was breathtaking, the trail (crushed limestone) was very kind to my legs, and the weather was perfect (though no one can control that). The Native American drummers at the start was a unique and fitting touch, given the venue. The first 5K is hilly, but the 10 miles after it are a gradual downhill. The second half is an out-and-back that is uphill on the way out. Six miles of steady uphill wears on you, but the downhill coming back is worth it. Aid stations were well-stocked and -staffed, and there was minimal crowd support, though with all the stunning scenery I didn't miss it :) The clay finishers' medals are wonderfully unique, and the T-shirt is one of my favorites. It's a soft technical cotton and very comfortable. The organizers do an excellent job--I would recommend this marathon to anyone.

It's a hard race for crowd support because we are mostly on trails but there was one amazing stand out cheerer with her cowbells that cheered for all of us runners every 2 miles. She more than made up for how few were there. Emily Wheeler organizes a great race. My favorite race of a racing year that included 2 Disney theme parks.

The course was beautiful. I did the Mickelson half marathon and I liked how they put your name on the bib so people would cheer your name, that would have been cool if they had done that. I also didn't like taking the same route through hill city as the half marathon, it was kind of disheartening when people were cheering "your almost there" when I wasn't even half way done...So maybe just splitting where the two went right as we entered town could have avoided that problem. The volunteers were all great and the medals were super cool. I really like the drummers at the beginning. The hill at the end was pretty rugged.

The beginning of the course was difficult for a flat lander like myself, however after mile 3 it was easier!! The route was beautiful!!! The people manning the stations were very helpful and supportive! It was an amazing race and if I do it again I will have to train a little harder!! :) Thank You!!
