Learn : Half Marathon Story

Running Background:

I consider myself an intermediate runner and I primarily run for fitness. I decided to run this particular half marathon because I wanted to run a race each month during the summer. I like the challenge.

I just maintained my fitness in preparing for this race. I was running 3 days a week for 30 minutes, biking, and strength training. Leading up to the race, I averaged 15 miles per week.

For people thinking about running a half marathon I would tell them to just go out and have fun.

Race Day:

The 2007 Run with the Horses Half Marathon was what I expected. We got on the bus at 5:15 AM. There was standing room only! They had more people than they expected sign up for the race. We had about a 45 minute wait at the start line before we could begin. The sun wasn't up yet, and it was cold! Everyone looked frozen. There was only one porta potty, for about 75 runners. Needless to say, there was still a line when the gun went off.

Beautiful scenery. Nice, compact, gravel, country road. The first part was hilly. The last 4 miles where down hill and fairly steep. Pavement during the last 2 miles or so. Aid stations every 2 miles with water and Gatorade. I almost missed the sharp right hand turn at mile marker 25! There wasn't anyone there to direct people, and it was a small enough race that everyone was fairly spread out. There was a pedestrian railroad bridge during the last 1/2 mile that was pretty steep. The food table at the end of the race was very nice.

My recovery wasn't bad. I took a 30 minute nap -- that was really nice!

Tips/Words of Encouragement:

Just go out there and see how you do!

Plans to Run Another:

I'm planning to run another half marathon because I like the challenge. I always like to see if I can beat my previous time.

For my next half marathon, I would be more prepared for the cool summer mornings.
