Note from Editor: The 2007 Chicago Marathon was cancelled mid-run due to the heat. Below is a first-hand account from one of the runners who was forced to stop running. To learn more about what happened, read this AFP news story.
Running Background:I consider myself a beginner runner and I primarily run for hobby. I watched my son and daughter-in-law run the 2006 Chicago Marathon and I set a goal for myself to run a marathon after I retired in November 2006. Training:I trained for 11 months following Jeff Galloway's run/walk method. During my training I averaged 25 miles per week. Race Day:The 2007 Chicago Marathon was worse than expected. I ran with my son who is an experienced marathon runner. The participation in the marathon was therefore a sentimental event for me. Recovery:I didn't have any problems with my recovery. I did some massage therapy following the race. Running Gear Recommendations:
Tips/Words of Encouragement:Be careful not to over train to avoid injury. Plans to Run Another:I haven't decided if I'll run another marathon. I am still dealing with the disappointment of the 2007 Chicago Marathon.
