Running Background:

marathon photoI consider myself an intermediate runner and I primarily run for fitness. I decided to run a half marathon because I wanted see if I could do it.

I followed a 10 week program that involved running 3 days a week, some other form of cardio 3 days a week, and one day off per week. For the running portion, Tuesday was a track workout, Thursday was a tempo run, and on the weekend I did a long run.

The best training advice I would share with others is to stick to the plan!

Race Day:

The 2006 Deadwood Mickelson Trail Half Marathon was awesome! The Mickelson Trail is a perfect running surface and the half marathon course is mostly downhill. It's a great time in the outdoors - not on paved city streets! The weather on race day was perfect with light sprinkles in the morning and great cloud cover. At about mile 8 I got a side cramp, but we pushed ourselves through it and finished in our goal of under 2 hours. Overall it was a perfect day.

My recovery wasn't too bad. I rested and slept.

Tips/Words of Encouragement:

If you have thought about doing it, just do it. Find a training plan and stick to it. They make them for a reason. I like to write it out and hang it up on the wall, and check off each workout. For me, it is a good visual, and I can see my progress as the day approaches.

Plans to Run Another:

I'm planning to run another marathon. This year I am going to try the full marathon in June 2007. I want to challenge myself and test my abilities.

For my next race, I'm going to wear sunglasses.
